FFS

No, not what you were thinking FFS = For Four Square. I have joined up, have a bunch of badges and more offers for Domino’s Pizza than you can imagine, and am mayor of everything from my home to my office to my own left foot.

I really love Social media but also appreciate the amount of time it can waste. I am currently en route to London to a short but tough meeting and am documenting the delayed journey via foursquare – follow me for the full gory details but thus far we have been @Newportstation, @Bristol Parkway, @ Bath, @Chippenham, @ Swindon and soon may get to @DidcottbloodyParkway.

If you can contain your excitement I will be coming through the @revolvingdoors sometime today.FFS!

Random Acts of Music #8 The Pretender

Ok, not The Great Pretender, or something by The Pretenders, but the barnstorming rocket from the fantastic Foo Fighters. Just think – if Kurt hadn’t did what he did we would never have heard this…

Film versus Book – which version works for you?

Do you always prefer the film version of a story or always the original book, or are you flexible? My daughter got up and left the room last night after about 2 minutes of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo because it was partly dubbed and she “never likes films where the lips don’t match the English words”. She also won’t watch a film when she has read and liked the book. She also won’t eat anything that has passed near to a fish, but we’ll talk about that another day.

I disagree – to me sometimes the film is better, sometimes the book is better, sometimes they each have a uniqueness that makes them both good. TGWTDT is a case in point. I absolutely loved the book and the film was much anticipated. It was not as deep as the book, not as complex and at times a little messy but I really enjoyed the film as well. Lord of the Rings was a draw for me as well, both great (Daughter “They missed Orc number 7684 who appeared on page 465 etc etc”). Terry Pratchett – always better in print, Dickens – always in print, John Irving – my favourite author (sorry Mr Dickens) brilliant in print but built for wonderful films – think Garp or Hotel New Hampshire. How about Dan Brown? – film would have won had someone other than Tom Hanks been cast in the lead role?

And anyway, how do you get an 18 year old to have an open mind?

Tell me your examples, your favourites, what works for you or not – use the comments button below.

July 14th 2010 is my 50th birthday. They tell me it’s all over now – it isn’t!!…..

Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday dear…oh poo, what’s my name?

Suffice it to say that from my point of view nothing has changed, my hips haven’t fallen off today, I still have my teeth, and policemen still look like policemen. 50 is the new 30, bald is the new hairstyle and I will not go gentle into any good night, thank you very much.

So rather than commiserate with me, please join me in looking forward to the next 50 years (ok maybe that is tempting fate a bit), play a little punk music or Children Of The Revolution and watch as I pick up more speed as I run past. No big party this time, hopefully a barefoot walk along a beach.

Have a good day, leave comments and talk soon.

Time for a change

Gosh it is a long time since 1979. Upfront I should say that I am not a particularly political animal – I’m a bit like my father who categorized the parties as “All as bad as each other”, or my grandfather who stood as an independent candidate in Wolverhampton in the distant past because he didn’t think the other candidates were representative of the population. Apparently he did very well – but I have no idea of the year or constituency.

What it is worth saying is that there comes a time when a change is needed. In my opinion, like 1979 that time is now. The big difference now is that there is less of a clear distinction between the parties. In the intervening years they have all gravitated towards the centre. Has anyone heard much of phrases like “right wing”, “socialist”, “left wing” during this campaign? Didn’t think so.

In 1979 I was a young business student, and Thatcher represented a clear change, a clear alternative to ropey Labour governments, Union led Britain and rubbish piled in the streets. Admittedly it was brutal after the election and for a few years afterwards, but she was a leader, and the country changed – it needed to. When Blair won, it was at a time when the Tories were past their peak, they had been in power too long. The good early Thatcher year politicians had given way to grey, weak people. Again the country needed change and for the first few years Blair (or was it Brown as Chancellor?) delivered.

My dilemma is this: when a country needs change, it needs new, fresh thinking and clear, real leadership. I just can’t see it in the current crop of leadership candidates. Cameron is altogether too smooth for his own good, can look flustered and seems to base everything on “not doing what they did”; Clegg is a more impressive man but at best will have an influence on a hung parliament (never a good long term plan), and frankly Brown is not a leader – after all of the years poking away at Blair to get his chance he has blown it – my guess is that he is not a pleasant man at all. Incidentally are we sure he said “bigot”? It has been suggested that he actually said “big foot”.

So what to do? Well I will vote for change. Not out of massive confidence in anyone, but out of the recognition that things are cyclical and that the current Government is past it. If this sounds downbeat, it is. In my humble opinion we are not in for a period of massive and invigorating change, rather a period of turgid policies and tax rises (whoever wins) out of which a new leader may emerge.

Am I the only one struggling to see anything remarkable at all this time around?
